How it is counted: Dam ladder count at Columbia River mile 292.
Dam day counts are expanded estimates: counters watch the ladders 16 hours a day, 50 minutes of every hour, and the day count is that tally multiplied by 1.2. Fish passing at night, through the navigation lock or through turbines are not counted. The Corps reviews counts with video after the season and occasionally revises them.
Steelhead pass through the whole Apr 1 – Oct 31 counting window; the upriver summer steelhead run makes up most of the passage. Fish passing in winter are video-counted on a delayed schedule and are not in these totals.
